Joe Jonas has had several daring haircuts and an equal number of beautiful girlfriends over the years. After his reported split from Gigi Hadid earlier this month, Jonas surfaced with a modest streak of blue in his hair. Then, the streak expanded into a tuft of blue. And now, debuting at the AMAs on Sunday, Jonas stepped out with full set of Smurf blue ombre locks. If we had to guess, the move seems like a classic case of breakup hair—i.e. that thing where an emotional transformation manifests in a physical one—but Jonas has defended his dye job as just a coincidental change that had nothing to do with his personal life.

As much as we’re inclined to give blue hair the side eye, Jonas doesn't seem fazed by it—and that's the key to pulling off a look like this. He was smart to segue into the bright color slowly and leave the buzzed parts of his hair alone. Also: the shade doesn’t actually wash him out too much (an important part of any hair color-related change). If you’re going to go full pop star and dye your hair a bright color, do it like this. Now, for his next hair swerve, we're saying it should be a buzz-cut. With high-maintenance hair everywhere, the shaved look feels decidedly fresh. Plus, what better way for Joe to prove he's gotten rid of all that emotional baggage? We kid. (Well, kind of.)
