As we continue to practice safe social distancing from our respective bedrooms, parks and bars are empty—but the world of TikTok is booming. From A-list celebrities to teens who are somehow incredibly famous (but only on TikTok) to the rest of the platform’s roughly one billion daily active users, the Gen Z–centric social media network is more connected and creative than ever. Even if you're not looking to go viral by learning the dance routine to Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” you can log in and see how the world's cool teens are expressing themselves in unprecedented ways.
A big part of this has been the network’s emergence as a driver of microtrends in self-care and grooming. (The #mensgrooming hashtag has over 92.3 million views, last we checked.) It’s become a hub for everything from earnest advice about the importance of clean fingernails to flexing wildly complicated makeup looks. It’s a new wave of self-expression, without any whiff of sales plugs, where anything is “in.” Regardless of your gender identity and sexuality, you’re welcome to dye your hair or paint your nails and show them off on the Tok.
As we enter our sixth week (or is it year?) of social distancing at home, and many of us inevitably begin to rethink our everyday routines, we did a deep dive into the cheekiest and most popular grooming trends on TikTok. It gets wild in the deep end of the app, so this isn’t exactly an endorsement of everything in here. (You’ll, uh, see what we mean.) But if you’re bored at home, you can try any of this, right now—TikTok fame absolutely not necessary.
1. Nail CareSome of Gen Z’s angstier set have taken to painting their nails. On the sunnier side, mixed-and-matched polish colors are being championed by members of the infamous Los Angeles Hype House.
If your nails are currently unpainted—or anxiously bitten in this stressful time—there's no lower-stress moment than now to test-drive a coat. Maybe try a Kurt Cobain–esque black before diving head-first into at-home nail art.
2. Beard TipsSocial isolation isn’t an excuse to let your beard go full Castaway. In fact, this may actually be the absolute best time to try something new. Plenty of bearded men have taken to the platform to break down the specifics of their daily beard routines, and the format “How to Beard” includes a handful of legitimately helpful Toks demonstrating...exactly what it promises!
3. Dyed hairAre you trying to become a viral TikTok star overnight? As we've noted, bleaching your own hair isn't something we cosign, but it may be the best place to start. From vibrant layers to bleaching your locks, dyed hair has been in. Need more inspiration? Scroll #dyedhaircheck.
4. Shaved EyebrowsThe #EyebrowChallenge dares users to, yes, shave off their eyebrows. The hashtag not only has left many users unable to express surprise, but has simultaneously inspired—if that's the right word—new brow-centric fads. Since the emergence of #EyebrowChallenge, many have taken to the platform to show off, style, trim, pluck, gel, glitter, and dye their eyebrows, whether bushy or bare. If social isolation has left you feeling somewhere between bold and unhinged, then grab your beard trimmer and get crazy. (Caveat: Eyebrows take about four to six months to grow back.)
5. MakeupAlthough TikTok is by no means the first social media platform with a massive male beauty space, influencers like Bretman Rock, Ryan Potter, Lewys, Zachary Edward, and more have continued to use their very large platforms on the app to vocalize their love of makeup. If studying these influencers’ routines teaches us anything, it’s that there's a big, beautiful, eyeshadowy world beyond your basic cleanser-and-moisturizer regimen.
