Danny Zuko, hair god.
Don’t be the dude in the office bathroom splashing water on his head, desperate to regain hair control. If your look turns from calm and cool to poofy, choppy, or completely flat in a few hours, you’re doing it wrong. Runway stylist Garrett Bryant of De Berardinis Salon in New York City explains how to style hair so it stays fresh for a full day and then some.
7:00 A.M.: Start Light
“The trick to getting the most out of your hairstyle is to stay away from products that have a super hard hold—hair needs wiggle room so that it can be refreshed throughout the day,” says Bryant. Try applying a dime-sized amount of a light (silicone-free) grooming crème, like Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Styling Treatment, to hair that’s still wet. “I style my hair sort of conservatively at first and then run my fingers through it after it’s air-dried.” (If you need more hold, try a medium hold paste like Kerastase Homme Capital Force Pâte.)
12:00 P.M.: Take a Sheet
You threw on a hat and scarf to pick up lunch and now your head’s full of frizz and flyaways. Instead of furiously patting down hair (finger action adds grease) try rubbing a dryer sheet over it instead to kill off the static charge.
3:00 P.M. on: Layer
If you notice pieces are starting to fall out of place, rub a tad more product between palms and apply. “Since you started with a lighter product, it’s ok to add a little more to dry hair as they day goes on,” says Bryant.
11:00 P.M.: Fight Oil
Some men sweat a lot when they sleep. If you’re the type to wake up with greasy stands, try applying a dry shampoo (try Alder Juniper Natural Hair Powder) to your roots to soak up oil while you snooze.
7:00 A.M., the Morning After: Get Some Air
Time to add life back to matted down hair. “Dab a little water on your roots to reactivate the product from yesterday, and then take a blow dryer to the front of hair for a little more lift,” says Bryant. Repeat the process from yesterday, ideally showering at some point.
