Never mind what hair John Hamm had going on in the 90’s—the sleek side part he’s been sporting for the past six seasons of Mad Men is a thing of grandeur. (And possibly the only steady thing Don Draper’s got as we head into the seventh and final season.) Appropriate for the office, black tie events, or casual dinners out, you literally cannot lose with this no-fuss style. And since every man could use a refresher (the whisky kind and otherwise) here are a few tips for creating the look from stylist Garrett Bryant of De Berardinis Salon in New York City.

The Cut: Ask the barber to keep the sides and back of hair around an inch long, and leave up to four inches on top. Everything should be evenly blended and feel slightly square—no severe barbershop fades here.

The Style: Depending on your hair type and the severity of the look you want, strong/medium hold gels and pomades both work to maintain the slick style. Gels can tame thick or wavy locks into submission and will leave hair shellacked and stiff. (Hamm’s hairdresser on the show has said she uses Redken for Men Grip Tight Holding Hair Gel for Men.) Meanwhile, pomades (like Baxter of California’s Hard Water Pomade) are a good option for guys with thin to normal hair and offer more shin and pliability.

After showering, apply the gel or pomade evenly throughout damp hair, and use a fine-tooth comb (like this folding pocket comb from Kent) to find your natural part. (Just brush hair forward, shake your head lightly and notice where hair starts to separate.) Comb the sides of hair down, then push the front slightly back and over to the side. Let hair air dry to set. (If you’ve still got flyaways, a spritz of hairspray will lock the style in. Suave’s Max Hold Hairspray is unscented and does the job.) Finish with a swig of brown liquor and foreboding look into the mirror before heading out the door.
