The Secret Weapons of A-List Celebrity Groomers

December has a way of taking a toll not only on your waistline but also your mug. Several weeks of poor nutrition, excessive drinking, and not enough water can make you look older—and not in a distinguished, George Clooney sort of way. To that end, and with awards season kicking off tonight with the Golden Globes, we asked three celebrity grooming goddesses—Sydney Zibrak, Erica Sauer Dulley, and Jenn Streicher—to share their tips for getting male clients camera-ready in a matter of minutes. Take their advice and you’ll look like your old, young self in no time (maybe even better).

Remove Dead Skin

“The key to a giving a man's skin that natural, manly glow is to get rid of the dead skin cells”, says Erica Sauer Dulley, who uses SpaCells Bath Mitt and Cellmen Face Scrub on clients before a big awards show. Jenn Streicher also swears by exfoliation but notes that if a client visited the barber that day or shaved himself, he’s already pretty much done the work of sloughing away the dull top-layer of skin. So guys, pick one.

Address Rebellious Hairs

“One thing I always do is trim the eyebrows. Guys always have like five crazy-long eyebrow hairs that need some attention”, says Streicher. She quickly uses a comb and grooming scissors to clean things up, making her clients look more polished and fresh.

If grays are more your gripe, Sydney Zibrak uses a makeup palette from a professional line called Reel Creations to cover them up quickly in her client’s beard or sideburns. “It’s alcohol-activated makeup which means it won’t rub off once it dries on the hair”, she notes. Turns out the brand has e-commerce too.

Moisten and Moisturize

Once you’ve rubbed off dead skin and reined in unruly hairs, the next step, according to all three ladies, is to hydrate the hell out of your face. Zibrak starts with Koh Gen Do Facial Wipes to wake up and soften the skin followed by moisturizer. All three groomers recommend a lightweight moisturizer that isn’t completely matte. Dulley uses Kinara Weightless Moisturizer and Streicher is a fan of ReVive Renewal Cream.

Don’t Neglect Your Eyes

Tired eyes will age you pretty drastically, which is why they’re a focus for men who are about to be on camera in front of millions of people. Zibrak and Steicher both use an eye mask to reduce puffiness before a red-carpet event. Zibrak likes Rodial Dragon’s Blood Eye Masks, which have a cooling effect. (Think of it like an ice pack for your dark circles.)

Consider Getting Professional Help

All three women use a little bit of makeup on their clients when it’s needed—but we’ll save that intel for another day since, let’s be real, it’s not for everyone. The extra-special step you might consider before diving into the world of concealer: a facial. When Dulley and Steicher touch base with clients before the weekend of the show, they’ll usually encourage them to visit an aesthetician for a deep cleaning. If your holiday season was especially indulgent (and you somehow still have funds to spare) consider it an excuse to have your face massaged for the better part of an hour.
