Has this been the best summer ever or what, you guys? Just look at how many famous men are working on lazy-summer beards—the international symbol of contentedness and self-possession. When fall comes around and these guys need to get back to the grind, here’s who should hold onto their beard and who should let it go. Because even though we’re all in on this Dandy Wildman thing, you have to admit that some guys just look better without so much hair.
Andrew Garfield
Beard Status: Garfield’s been letting it all hang out in the grooming department for the better part of a year. Earlier this month he had just a mustache but as of yesterday, the beard is back.
Rank: 5. Look, he’s a handsome guy but we prefer the more clean-cut look from his Spiderman days.
Joe Manganiello
Beard Status: Manganiello sports salt-and-pepper stubble on the regular, but lately he’s been doing this more sculpted thing.
Rank: 4. Such an intimidatingly sized man probably shouldn’t have a devilish goatee like this.
John Stewart
Beard Status: Stewart was mostly clean-shaven in his Daily Show days but since the show wrapped, he’s ditched the razor completely.
Rank: 3. Stewart earned this retirement beard—he should enjoy it for awhile.
Lenny Kravtiz
Beard Status: Kravitz always has a bit of a shadow going on but this summer he’s really let the facial hair take over.
Most PopularRank: 2. He can kind of do whatever he wants (except maybe exposure-prone leather pants) because he is a genetic marvel. He has our blessing here.
Jason Schwartzman
Beard Status: Schwartzman’s been growing out his hair and beard all year. He is not messing around with this thing.
Rank: 1. Some people were just born to have a lot of hair. Schwartzman is one of them.
