Beauty Tested, Beast Approved

Beauty Tested, Beast Approved is a grooming blog for normal guys. My wife, Amy (the beauty director of Allure magazine) has tried thousands of products over the years—mostly on herself, but often on the human guinea pig who sleeps next to her. Here are some of my picks, and for all Beast Approved entries, head here.

Hallelujah, winter is officially over. I can finally shed a few layers of clothing and let my pasty skin see the light. But don’t think I’ll be exposing myself to the sun without proper protection. Not when you’re married to a beauty editor. With Amy, the UV advisory alert is always elevated to its highest level: Orange. As in, "Don’t ever let me catch you looking that color!" And for the most part, I heed the warnings...but it can feel like a chore.

When I force myself out of bed at 7 in the morning to go for a run, the last thing I want to do is slather on a sticky glob of sunscreen. But thirty minutes of direct sunlight is more than enough time to damage your skin, so this spring I’m getting practical with Dermalogica’s Solar Defense Wipes SPF 15 ($22 for a pack of 15 at dermalogica.com). These handy towelettes, dispensed tissue-like from a resealable pack, offer a convenient solution when you’re short on time (or just lazy). With one wipe, I can quickly cover my neck, face, and arms; they’re infused with liquid sunscreen (as opposed to white goop), so you don’t even need a mirror to apply because there’s nothing to rub in. For a morning jog or any other short stint in the sun, they’re ideal; but because they’re only SPF 15, you can’t rely on them at the beach--as my wife would say, you’ll need a higher SPF for that.
