In the age of sky-high pompadours and man buns, Michael Fassbender remains the master of the short crop. How much time does someone with back-to-back films have to spend on their hair, anyway? The November cover star’s on-set groomer, David Cox, explains how to recreate his no-fuss look.

The Inspiration: "At the end of the day, the clothes and styling really determine the look," says Cox. "He had some sweat on his t-shirt and dirt on his face, so we wanted the hair to look tough, but not mad."

The Cut: Fassbender showed up with hair that had grown out from a buzz cut to all one length, so Cox went in with scissors to add shape and texture. "The key is cutting in closer to the temples—keeping that area short allows you to have a little messiness up top while still looking put together."

The Style: Cox blew Fassbender’s hair halfway dry and then applied Kevin Murphy Night.Rider Matte Texture Paste throughout with his fingers, lifting the hair up before letting it air dry. "It gives a little bit of texture to short hair."
