Harry’s has quickly gained a reputation as a different kind of grooming company. Their stylish razors, luxurious shaving cream, and noble cause have garnered praise from customers and editors alike. Their latest endeavor plays into the notion of the neighborhood barbershop, filtered through the brand’s discerning, design-conscious eye.
Harry’s Corner Shop opened up today, and it channels the old school vibe similar to the guys chopping heads at other boutique barbers like Fellow Barber and Rudy’s, but trades the downtown cool guy sensibilities (though you can still get a slick-looking side part) for an ambience that balances a cheeky vintage vibe (barber posters from the ’70s that would make Ron Burgundy proud) with a self-aware sense of community. It’s done in the mom-and-pop spirit of the neighborhood, and attempts to blend in with other local mainstays rather than stick out like a well-manicured thumb.
That’s part of the charm, really. When we stopped by, men on the street already started to pop in asking to get a cut—some lived in the area, and others just worked nearby—exactly the type of unpretentious, accessible vibe most guys want in a barber. The shop’s also got grooming products aplenty, ranging from Baxter’s pomade to Italian shaving cream from Proraso. You can even buy Sleepy Jones bors, Public Supply Notebooks, classy Caran d’Ache ballpoint pens, and perhaps our favorite item, plain white Fruit of the Loom T-shirts. It’s a high/low touch that reminds us of the corner barber shops of yore—when buying a fresh white T-shirt then and there meant heading to your next destination irritation-free.
Perhaps the most ingenious part of getting a cut at Harry’s Corner Shop is the in-store app that allows you to keep track of your new ’do. At the end of each cut, the barber takes several photos of your hair, and adds notes of the methods and products used to get it to look like that. So next time you come in, you can tweak your last cut, or have the exact same thing. That alone is worth a visit.
