Beauty Tested, Beast Approved

My bathroom at home looks like a ransacked Sephora. Bottles and tubs and tubes of half-used goop to make you look better, smell better—hell, be better. It’s what you get when you’re married to the beauty director at Allure magazine. My wife, Amy, has tested thousands of products over the years in the name of journalism—mostly on herself, but often on the human guinea pig who sleeps next to her.

Cosmetically speaking, I was a pretty normal guy before we met. My grooming regime consisted of bar soap, deodorant, and a toothbrush—but that all changed when we began sharing a bathroom. Things started innocently enough. If I was showering and my bar of Irish Spring disintegrated, I’d reach for the pomegranate-mango-scented body wash she was testing. If I was breaking out, I’d use her foaming face wash with salicylic acid. New products were in constant rotation, so I found myself reviewing things I would never buy on my own (or so I thought).

I was pretty vocal with my critiques. If something rubbed me the wrong way (often literally), I’d let Amy know that I found the eoliating beads too harsh, the scent too fruity, or the bottle too unwieldy; when I found something that worked, I’d rave to her too. I took my job as a product tester very seriously and soon developed some interesting brand loyalties.

And now I’m telling the world—or at least you, GQ reader. I’ll be doing a series of posts on GQ.com about my favorite grooming items (which my wife will be responding to on Allure.com). Read on for the first.

What: Supersmile Tongue Cleaner, $4

Where: Supersmile

Why: Losing the war against halitosis? Blame your tongue. The bacteria found on it is responsible for 85% of bad breath. You won’t be surprised after seeing the gunk this inexpensive tool removes. Resembling one of those old-fashioned two-person lumberjack saws, this flexible piece of plastic gently scrapes away all the foulness—and trust me, everyone will thank you.
