Actor/singers Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens are currently making headlines for a romantic Valentine’s Day gesture that went, according to the law, wrong. Here's what happened: the pair carved their names into a rock at a national park in Arizona and, because they're millennials, shared the act on Instagram. Now the police are after them—desecration of this kind is a federal offense punishable with a $5,000 fine and/or up to six months in jail. We’ll let the U.S. Forest Service continue with their investigation, while we embark on an investigation of our own (sorry): Into the greatness of this young couple’s matching haircuts.
Matching boy-girl haircuts are always tricky. Think of Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow’s blonde crops circa 1997. An iconic moment, sure, but not one you’d ever want to recreate. But Butler and Hudgens demonstrate how it’s possible to have the same cut and yet look like individuals. Whether worn up or down, Butler’s hair is always messier, greasier, dirtier than Hudgen’s hair. While hers looks like it was styled with some sort of hot tool (because it’s smooth and shiny), Butler’s looks like it’s been plastered to his face during a month-long couch nap. While she's probably using shine serum or oil, he's probably using paste, wax, or dry shampoo. The stuff that adds grit and tackiness—DGAF-hair in a bottle.
The lessons here: It’s OK to have the same haircut as your partner, just don’t necessarily steal all their styling moves. Messy-long hair is masculine-long hair. And not caring is a grooming move we endorse. Oh, and don’t photograph yourself committing crimes.
