When we found out UFC fighters Luke Rockhold (current middleweight champion) and Robbie Lawler (welterweight champion) were stopping by GQ's offices, we wondered what we could have them do for us. Could they teach us self-defense? How to take a punch? Ways to make your body into a weapon that can force another man into submission? Sure, they could, but that all sounded very painful, and no one here seemed to think we had the paycheck or the number of icepacks to make enduring that torment worthwhile. Instead, we turned to the pre-fight weigh-in. It's a weird mix of ferocity and intimacy as the two men take their clothes off in front of a room full of people, step on a scale, and then gaze not-so-longingly into each other's eyes, trying to stare fear into the man they are going to repeatedly punch/kick/harm.
So, we thought, who better to teach us how to peer into another man's soul, and make him shake with fright? That's a skill everyone needs, right?
They offered us some tips and then put their skills to the test, facing off in the first-ever GQFC staring competition. The rules? Simple: you blink or you laugh, you lose. The winner would go on to face me, Clay Skipper (though they chose to call me by my much more intimidating and scary-sounding nickname "Lil Skip"), GQ's undefeated and resident staring champion, across all weight classes (first one in history to achieve that, thanks). The staring contests were not intense, not ferocious, and featured more than a few giggles. I won't tell you who won, but I will say it wasn't me. Which, frankly, was a wild upset. Also wildly upsetting for me. But even Ronda Rousey loses sometimes. I'll be back.
