I am Reader in Bioethics and Social Science in the Faculty of Health and Life Science at the University of Liverpool. My research focuses on the social and ethical aspects of health-care decision-making, policy and regulation, with a particular interest in empirical ethics and socio-legal approaches.
I did my first degree at the University of Manchester in philosophy, an M.Phil. in the history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge and my PhD at Liverpool (a qualitative investigation into how doctors make ethical decisions in the infertility clinic).
I currently teach on the MBChB (medical degree), running Research & Scholarship modules on reproductive technologies, delivering lectures and acting as an academic advisor to medical students. I ran a Masters in healthcare ethics for 15 years at Liverpool and now contribute to other Masters across the University. I also supervise a number of PhD students.
I have conducted research in reproductive technologies (gamete and embryo donation); research ethics (clinical trials and public involvement and cross-cultural issues in consent); the organisation and funding of health care provision; and the use of evidence in practice and policy.
I have held visiting fellowships at the Centre for Research in Arts, Social Science and Humanities (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge and the Centre for Medical Ethics and Law at the University of Hong Kong.
I have published widely on a range of topics within the field of bioethics.
